SHOPPING!!!

So  . . . Josh and I have done really well recently.  We haven't saved as much as we would have liked to this past month, but moving into the house has left us with a little filling-up to do.  Since I work at Pier 1 now, what better place is there to start decorating a bare home?  Plus!  Because it is Associate Appreciation week, we are given an additional 10% off our purchases (I currently get 20%, so do the math -- that's 30% off!).  The following are the items we picked up today (visit Pier1.com to shop for yourself):

Four place settings in a mixed arrangement of Cubic Dinnerware.

Cubic serving pieces along with a grey Cubic Charger for entertaining.

One tall and one short Cubic Goblet for each setting.

These three Double-Dipped Hurricanes for the living room coffee table

Each of these smaller Urban Zenith vases for the dining centerpiece, with a spray of white silk Orchids and silk Eucalyptus

For the bathroom, this awesome little Zen Candlescape

New for Christmas! Frosty and Santa!

And in the bedroom, we have a new Papasan chair with ottoman.  It's huge and super comfy!

Shopping was fun!  Now to bed!

Closer

Shocked

Okay.  It's becoming more real to us now.  The move, that is.  Washington, D.C. to be exact.  It's feeling more and more like a real thing now.  I can feel it in my gut.

What am I going on about?  Josh called me at work just now.  He's received a report date for our PCS.  15 September is the soonest we can be there, and we, along with the recruiter's office, have been planning to move as soon as we are allowed.  That's a little further away than we had planned, but it's been at least three weeks since they mentioned August, so I feel it's appropriate that the move was pushed back, too.

"Are you ready?"  he asked sweetly.  Yes.  Yes I am.  Of course.  I'm ready for anything as long as it means I'm going with him.  That's a wonderful feeling.  Am I scared?  OF COURSE!

When I moved from Phoenix to Show Low with my parents, that sucked.  I left my friends and my familiar surroundings for a podunk town.  But at least I was with my family.  That was important to my sanity and it actually helped me to appreciate my family more.

Then I left Show Low to come back here and lived with my grandmother.  Again, leaving the familiar to immerse myself in the not-so-familiar-anymore.  That was scary for me, but at least I had my grandmother/roommate to help me face a different world than I had known for four years.  Today, I think I know my grandmother better than anyone has ever known a grandmother of their own.  She's one of my best friends.

And now, Josh and I are facing something entirely unknown.  Together.  I know I shouldn't, but for some reason I fear that this change may put some strain on our relationship and possibly push us apart - not closer together.  I know we would never let that happen, I just hope we have the strength to control it.

Sgt and Mrs. Joshua Palochak

(Ash writes:)  Josh's promotion ceremony was yesterday.  He is officially a Staff Sergeant now and he has the paycheck to prove it.  Luke Air Force Base makes a pretty big deal out of these promotion ceremonies, especially the SSgt promotion, because the commander believes it is one of, if not the most important position in the enlisted AF. The way he put it was "The chain of command starts with you."

Apparently other bases do not make such a big deal out of this accomplishment, which is very discouraging to many enlistees, I'm sure.  "Luke does it right," they all say. So I just wanted to say congratulations to Joshua for his promotion, I hope you will all do the same. I am so proud to call myself his wife.

I forgot to mention something the other day that I felt just NEEDED to be recorded in the blog.  It's our little twist on a twisted marital tradition: the eating of the year-old cake.  Now, if you recall, Josh and I did not immediately throw a reception for the family and friends after we were wed, that came a couple of weeks later.  However, when we did have our reception, my parents bought us a beautiful sheet cake adorned with wine-colored (edible) roses with silver leaves and an adorable, child-like bride and groom.  It was delicious the first time around.

Then the leftover was place in a Ziploc sandwich bag, which was wrapped in foil, and then sealed in a Tupperware container to remain frozen until May 27, 2006.  It survived a couple of power outages at the old apartment and a move to our current apartment, to be opened three days late.  That's right, we took it out of the freezer to thaw and forgot about it until Tuesday the 30th.  When we finally unwrapped it, this is what it looked like:

WholeCake

No, it wasn't moldy, or anything.  I think it just had some old cake residue on it from trying to slide it into the ziploc.  I couldn't believe the roses were still intact.

So, we stared at it for a little while, hoping that the anticipation of throwing up would subside.  Honestly, the cake wasn't all that bad after a year.  It was still very good, but the icing was sweeter than I remembered and the cake was very dense.  Like a heavy sponge.  All in all, this is as far as we got:

Eaten

The scoop marks in the roses were from Josh trying to be cute and rub icing all over my face, just like the day we came home from our honeymoon.  And then, we were ashamed that we couldn't get through the whole thing, so we tried to get rid of the evidence:

Poison

Charlie was NOT interested.  Here, Josh is trying to get Charlie closer, but Charlie keeps pushing away.  It was pretty funny.

Speaking of Charlie, and this is a proud moment in a mother's life, he graduated from pet training last night!  Hooray!  We got to take home a certificate and everything!  The instructor even told me that Charlie was by far his best student this year.  We are certainly proud of him.  This dog has become a very important part of this little family, we are pleased with his accomplishment.

CONGRATS TO BOTH MY BOYS!
You make a woman proud.

ONE YEAR!
No, it's not quite time for our anniversary, yet, but I forgot to mention over the weekend that Saturday would mark our first Year on MSN SPACES!  I can't believe it's been that long.  It has really blown by.  Thanks to MSN for featuring us the week we were married.  That and the continuing support from our regular readers and posters (Jenni, Bella, Elle, etc . . .) are what have really encouraged us to keep it going.

It may seem like this page has become more my OWN than OURS, but I promise that Josh shares in the joy of being connected with so many strangers around the world.  Afterall, he religiously checks for comments every night before bed.  He will write again soon, he has promised me, and I know you will continue to give us the encouragement we have always received of you.

So let's look at what we have been through in the past year:  new beginnings, cold feet, a wedding, violation and disappointment, a promotion, a new addition, a great honor, and, soon, a brand NEW new beginning, in Washington, D.C.

We want to say thanks for sticking with us through the thick and thin.  There have been a lot of ups and downs, although most of what you have seen has been the up. But if it is true what they say about the first year being the hardest, then Josh and I are in for a very blessed eternity together.  More on that soon!

The Good Prince

(Ash writes:)  Okay . . . the moment you've all been waiting for . . .

Last night, Josh was named Airman of the Year for the 56th Fighter Wing, the largest fighter wing in the United States Air Force.  He is number one of 1820 Airman, and he is still in absolute disbelief.

You should have seen this event.  There must have been 400 people in that dining room.  We were all dressed to the hilt and nervous as hell!  But the food was great and the company was even better.  So many great people showed up to support us.  At first I honestly believed that they were there just for him, but by the end of the night, when I was standing alone watching Joshua shake hands on stage, his coworkers and superiors took the time to congratulate (and calm) me.  I was hysterical:  laughing and crying all at the same time.  What a night.

For all of his hard work and dedication, Joshua has received a pile (literally) of amazing gifts.  We will be writing thank you cards for weeks to come.  We've got SO MUCH cash from different organizations and businesses on base; complete strangers gave us gift cards to restaurants that will feed us for two weeks straight; the commissary gave us a $250 shopping spree (which we'll be using to fund a party here at home, you're all invited!); and a three day, two night stay at the Riverside Resort in Laughlin, Nevada.  That's not even close to all, the list is long, but here is the kicker:

A local Toyota dealership has awarded Joshua the use of any Toyota of his choice for one full year.  I completely lost it when they gave this announcement.

The caliber of these generous individuals cannot be described in words.  I cannot say anything that would be adequate to thank them.

I also want to thank everyone who faithfully supported us, you are the most amazing friends.  Your thoughts and prayers certainly did us a lot of good.

Most importantly, though, I must thank the Lord.  His will for our lives may not be clear to us in the current hour, but we have certainly been blessed by His graciousness.  We feel so undeserving of the gifts He has showered over us, and we devote this honor to Him; for without his love and guidance, we never could have accomplished so many wonderful things.  Thank you, Father, for your generous heart.  We feel lucky to stand as an example of God's giving nature.  Amen.
